The poor taxidermist Pablo doesn’t have an easy time with those around him: his limping, quarrelsome, generally misanthropic and resentful wife Gloria, her brutal family and the parish community of bigoted over-pious zealots, vain, dumb notabilities and an over-efficient priest, who is more than capable of taking stolen money from his flock with some poorly feigned scruples in order to line the Lord’s nest. When Gloria smashes the camera that Pablo spent an eternity saving for, his patience comes to an end… The best Buñuel film that Buñuel didn’t direct can be seen as a perfect comedic pendant to the old master’s Ensayo de un crimen (1955).
